A Deeper Look
I was born in Fort Carson Colorado and born into a military family. While my childhood was awesome and filled with great memories they were also filled with some tough emotions as well. My Parents divorced when I was six, and my mom (along with an eight-year-old and a newborn) drove down to El Paso, Texas. This is where I really grew up. “The city of the 915” as singer Khalid would say. My parents divorce really rocked me but through that, I had my siblings to lean on and an encouraging mother as well.
My mom. She deserves her own paragraph. As a fierce single mom, she taught me the importance of loving myself and every ounce of “imperfections” I might have pointed out. She encouraged education as the gateway to a better lifestyle and more opportunities. Because of this, I worked hard and stayed focused to make her proud. She worked long hours to provide my siblings and I with the most priceless gifts in the form of opportunities and confidence. She believed in me first.
My initial encounter with any sort of pageant was competing for Miss Black El Paso my senior year of high school. The scholarship money afforded me some room to cut down on debt and continue my education into college. I committed to Grand Canyon University in Phoenix Arizona, went on to become a certified teacher, and eventually come to a full circle by becoming an Military Admissions Counselor then a Resident Director for the same university.
In 2020, the pandemic put a pause on a lot including pageantry as it was known and I lost a year of eligibility. In the midst, I was able to work on collaborating through an instagram series called Sisterhood Across States where I was able to connect with other MAO sisters through interviewing local titleholders about their community impact. Amazing enough, many of those same women went on to represent their state at Miss America.
In 2022, I was able to be a state representative as Miss Black Arizona USA and went on to become a national finalist. Pageantry has changed my life!
As of 2023, I have successfully completed my Master’s in Leadership with an emphasis in Homeland Security and Emergency Management. My desire is to use this degree with the great state of Maryland to work within recovery and mitigation for the government. As a leader in my community I work as a volunteer administrative assistant for Veterans 5-9; an organization geared toward expediting resources for military veterans as well as other volunteer project with the same service mentality.
While there is no way for me to completely encapsulate my entire life, the emotional roller coaster that it is, all of the people who continue to impact me, and the many nights building on dreams… in its truest form…I thank God because I LOVE the daughter, sister, friend, coworker, leader, and woman that I have become because of these things.
